The Regional Ocean Summit, orchestrated under the distinguished patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein and supported by the Jordan Tourism Board in partnership with the Aqaba Marine Park initiative, was conducted from May 14-16 at the Dead Sea in Jordan. As a novel addition to the World Ocean Summit series, this summit was inaugurated by Zanny Minton Beddoes, the Editor-in-Chief of The Economist. The event underscored significant prospects for both international and regional ocean leaders, alongside investors in the Middle East, Red Sea, and Mediterranean regions, emphasizing the delicate equilibrium between ocean conservation, water resource management, and economic development.
The summit witnessed the participation of His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al-Hussein and HRH Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II, both advocates for ocean conservation, who are committed to transitioning Jordan towards a sustainable ocean economy. The focus was particularly on the establishment of the Aqaba Marine Park and the protection of Jordan’s coral reefs, renowned for their unique resilience to climate change effects. Jordan, which has safeguarded 26% of its limited coastline, aims to establish a premier marine science and technology hub to foster international collaboration in climate resilience, innovation, and ocean conservation awareness in the region.
Ove Hoegh Gulde, professor of marine studies, international panel on climate change, University of Queensland, one of the many renowned experts and ministers attending the summit commented, “It is a really important conference coming at an especially important time. A time when we are seeing dramatic changes occurring in ecosystems like coral reefs which are of great concern given the new territory that they have put us in. This was a great chance to meet with people in the region and to swap ideas on this important topic” Other key speakers included Ray Dalio, founder, chief investment officer and board member, Bridgewater Associates and founder, OceanX, Peter Thomson, UN Secretary-General’s special envoy for the ocean, HSH Prince Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, and Bisher Al-Khasawneh, Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The event brought together over 200 influential figures, including leaders, policymakers, industry pioneers, investors, NGOs, and scientists from around the world.
