The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) is hosting the inaugural “International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf from June 14 to June 23. This ten-day event features three main attractions: the “International Gastronomy Promenade,” the “City of Gastronomy Showcase,” and the “International Gastronomy Forum, Macao.” The festival aims to integrate tourism and gastronomy, highlight Macao’s dynamic allure as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, showcase its capabilities as a platform, and enhance its reputation as a global hub for tourism and leisure.
The festival, dubbed “Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR – International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao,” is led by MGTO, in collaboration with the Macao University of Tourism, the Industry and Commerce Association of Macau ZAPE, six major resort enterprises, and numerous other partners.
At a press conference held today (May 24), MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, along with other key figures, unveiled the festival’s program, emphasizing Macao’s role as an international platform for exchange and innovation in gastronomy.
In her remarks, Senna Fernandes expressed that “International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” welcomes representatives from 30 Creative Cities of Gastronomy in Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, South and North Americas, the highest number of participating cities over the years. MGTO is dedicated to making this spectacular event of “tourism + gastronomy” into a new platform for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This platform will manifest the unique appeal and offerings of Macao as a Creative City of Gastronomy to residents and visitors. Not just that, it will give play to Macao’s strengths as an international exchange platform and leverage gastronomy and creativity to promote preservation, innovation and exchange among Creative Cities of Gastronomy around the world, contributing to the achievement of the goals in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This event also commemorates significant anniversaries: the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao SAR, marking a milestone year with this groundbreaking festival.
Macao’s allure and strengths as a hub will be prominently displayed at the upcoming “International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao.” Scheduled to kick off with an opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on June 15, the Fest will feature three major attractions: the “International Gastronomy Promenade”, the “City of Gastronomy Showcase”, and the “International Gastronomy Forum, Macao”. These events aim to unite various Gastronomy Cities to preserve culinary culture and foster international collaboration. The festival will not only highlight Macao’s role as a platform but also exhibit its unique blend of tourism and gastronomy through vibrant presentations, enhancing the experience for visitors.
- International Gastronomy Promenade
Set to take place from June 14 to 23 at Roman Amphitheatre Square and Legend Boulevard of Macau Fisherman’s Wharf, the “International Gastronomy Promenade” will operate daily from 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Centered around Asian culinary arts, this segment will feature 100 food booths hosted by catering enterprises from six Chinese Creative Cities of Gastronomy (Chengdu, Shunde, Macao, Yangzhou, Huai’an, Chaozhou) and three Asian cities (Phuket, Thailand; Kuching, Malaysia; Iloilo City, Philippines). Attendees can savor a wide array of signature dishes and popular treats, reflecting the diverse culinary landscapes of these cities. The Promenade will also offer approximately 700 dining seats, a game zone, a seaside bar, and a variety of entertainment including Portuguese folk dances, live bands, dance acts, and magic shows, alongside a special appearance by “MAK MAK.”
- City of Gastronomy Showcase
During the event, Macao will host chefs from 27 Creative Cities of Gastronomy worldwide on the Main Stage at Legend Boulevard of Macau Fisherman’s Wharf. These chefs will perform cooking demonstrations and share their culinary expertise across 62 sessions. Sampling opportunities will be available, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the rich and diverse gastronomic traditions and allure of the participating cities.
- International Gastronomy Forum, Macao
The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) previously organized the “International Gastronomy Forum, Macao” in 2016, 2018, and 2019. This forum serves as an invaluable platform for exchange and dialogue among Creative Cities of Gastronomy, exploring themes such as “Power of Gastronomy”, “The Potential of Gastronomy”, and “The Possibilities of Gastronomy and Creativity.” The forum has been instrumental in promoting Macao’s growth as a Creative City of Gastronomy.
The inaugural “International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” features the “International Gastronomy Forum, Macao” as a primary highlight. This first post-pandemic forum is set to convene on June 17 in the main hall of the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre. Themed “Holistic Gastronomy: Eat well, live well,” the event will gather delegates from Creative Cities of Gastronomy across the globe, leaders in the catering industry, representatives from Chinese member cities of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network from various sectors, and executives from integrated resort enterprises. Together, they will engage in deep discussions about integrating gastronomy and wellness, aiming to guide the future of food culture towards sustainability.
In addition to local efforts, the Fest collaborates with major media outlets like Guangdong Radio and Television and South China Morning Post to enhance Macao’s profile as a Creative City of Gastronomy. This partnership aims to meld “tourism + gastronomy” into a cohesive marketing strategy.
Additionally, from June 14 to 23, attendees can utilize a complimentary shuttle service available from 3:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The buses will operate along three routes, connecting major points such as Border Gate, Rua do Dr. Pedro José Lobo, Taipa Central Park, and the hotel resorts of six Cotai District integrated resorts—MGM Cotai, Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau, Studio City, Galaxy Macau, Wynn Palace, and The Venetian Macao—to the event’s location, facilitating easy access for all participants to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the Fest.
