In recent times, the Middle East has emerged as a prominent tourism destination garnering significant global attention. This month, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) rolled out a set of strategies aimed at engaging with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states in the Middle East. These initiatives are tailored for countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar. The objective is to enhance promotional endeavors for Hong Kong tourism within the Middle Eastern source markets and draw in a larger influx of travelers from these regions.
Mr Dane Cheng, HKTB Executive Director, said, “Statistically, about 80% of the total visitor
arrivals from the GCC countries travel to Hong Kong for leisure and business. They not only have
high spending power, but are also pursue to enjoy stylish travel experiences. With the increasing
number of direct flights between the Middle East and Hong Kong, the availability of high-end travel
experiences and the HKTB’s co-operation with the travel trade to enhance -friendly facilities in Hong
Kong, HKTB believes that we can welcome more visitors from the Middle East. HKTB has therefore
decided to seize the opportunity to launch a number of promotions this month to further capture the
opportunities arising from the Middle Eastern markets in collaboration with the travel trade.”
HKTB unveiled four significant promotions aimed specifically at the Middle Eastern markets.
- Record-Breaking Hong Kong Delegation Shines at Premier Arabian Travel Fair
Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) led its most extensive trade delegation ever, comprising over 30 representatives from Hong Kong’s travel industry, including travel agents, attractions, and hotels. They converged at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai, the largest international travel trade show in the Middle East, held from Monday to Thursday (6th to 9th May). The delegation engaged in networking with trade partners in the Middle East, fostering discussions on potential partnerships. At the event, HKTB erected a pavilion dedicated to showcasing Hong Kong’s unique experiences and attractions, enriching the understanding of Hong Kong within the tourism industry of the Arabian region.
- Strategic Partnerships to Boost Hong Kong Tourism
During the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), HKTB sealed two significant partnership deals. The initial agreement was with Emirates, a leading airline in the Middle East, while the second was with Dnata Travel Group, a prominent online travel agency. These memoranda of understanding (MoUs) are aimed at bolstering cooperation to promote Hong Kong as an alluring tourism destination in the Middle East. Witnessed by HKTB Executive Director Mr. Dane Cheng, the MoUs were signed by HKTB Deputy Executive Director Ms. Becky Ip, Mr. Orhan Abbas (Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations – Far East) of Emirates, and Mr. John Bevan, CEO of Dnata Travel Group. Under these agreements, HKTB will partner with Emirates to arrange immersive trips to Hong Kong for media, key opinion leaders (KOLs), travel industry professionals, and stakeholders from GCC countries. Meanwhile, HKTB and Dnata Travel Group will collaborate to promote Hong Kong tourism through various online and offline channels.
- Introducing “Travel in Luxe: Hong Kong” – A Guide to Exclusive Experiences
Recognizing the penchant of many Middle Eastern travelers for luxury experiences and tailored itineraries, HKTB unveiled the “Travel in Luxe: Hong Kong” guidebook. This publication showcases a plethora of exclusive lifestyle travel experiences in the city, categorized under themes like Cultural Encounters, Stylish Explorations, Family Retreats, and Exquisite Services. Examples include VIP Cantonese opera make-up and costume sessions with private show viewings at the Xiqu Centre, helicopter tours over Hong Kong, deluxe hotel suite accommodations with personalized shopping experiences and private dining by Michelin-starred chefs, and exclusive whole-venue theme park explorations with bespoke hospitality services.
- Immersive Familiarization Trips to Showcase Hong Kong’s Diversity
In addition to promotional endeavors in the Middle East, HKTB has extended invitations to over 10 entrepreneurs and travel industry representatives from the region to experience Hong Kong firsthand. These visitors will delve into the city’s charm and explore its Muslim-friendly facilities, gaining insights into Hong Kong’s cuisine, accommodations, culture, and travel experiences tailored for Muslim travelers. By leveraging the influence of these stakeholders and their networks, HKTB aims to raise awareness of Hong Kong as a welcoming destination for Middle Eastern travelers. Furthermore, HKTB will sustain its promotional activities in the Middle East, collaborating with local media to spotlight Hong Kong’s vibrant array of international arts and cultural events, as well as its culturally diverse festivals. Through content marketing and social media engagement, HKTB seeks to attract more young and family-oriented visitors from the Middle East to Hong Kong.
