Gaikwad: Dhoni Aims to Maximize Sixes in His Batting Approach

We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad remains unfazed by concerns over Matheesha Pathirana’s availability, citing a wealth of death-bowling options at his disposal. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni, the heart of CSK, has been preparing for IPL 2025 with his signature approach—focusing purely on power-hitting. Despite being 43, Dhoni’s role remains unchanged: coming in late, facing a few deliveries, and attempting to clear the boundary as often as possible.

“His training is very specific. He knows exactly what he needs to do,” Gaikwad shared ahead of CSK’s game against Mumbai Indians. “His goal is simple—maximize sixes, perfect his swing, and stay in the best shape possible. Even from day one, he looked fit and ready.”

MS Dhoni’s Impact on CSK and Gaikwad’s Confidence in Squad Depth

The CSK captain drew comparisons to legends like Sachin Tendulkar, who continues to impress with his batting prowess at 51. Dhoni, too, has shown no signs of slowing down. He recently reflected on his cricket journey, which began in 2005, emphasizing his desire to continue playing with the same enthusiasm he had as a child.

“I just want to enjoy the game,” Dhoni said at a recent event. “Like when I was in school, playing sports every afternoon with friends. Back then, if cricket wasn’t possible, we’d play football. I want to bring back that innocence in my game.”

Gaikwad highlighted the immense inspiration Dhoni provides to CSK’s squad. “Every day, watching him train is a lesson. Even some of our younger players struggle to strike the ball as cleanly as he does at 43. It’s remarkable and motivates us all.”

CSK’s Spin-Heavy Strategy and Pathirana’s Bowling Evolution

CSK has traditionally relied on their home advantage at Chepauk, known for assisting spinners. While last season saw a shift towards pace bowling, Gaikwad confirmed that this year, they are reinforcing their spin attack with top-quality bowlers.

“With [Ravichandran] Ashwin, [Ravindra] Jadeja, and Noor [Ahmed] in the squad, we wanted an aggressive wicket-taking spinner. Noor was among the best available, and he’ll be crucial if conditions suit us,” Gaikwad explained.

However, pace remains a vital component of CSK’s strategy. Pathirana, their second-highest wicket-taker since his debut in 2022, has adjusted his bowling action, with his arm release now slightly higher. His absence due to injury last season impacted CSK’s playoff chances, but Gaikwad is confident in their fast-bowling reserves.

“We had a good look at Pathirana in our practice game, and he’s in great shape. But we’ve also strengthened our pace attack. Mukesh [Choudhary] is bowling well, and Khaleel [Ahmed] is in top form. Anshul Kamboj has impressed in the domestic circuit, and we have backups like Gurjapneet [Singh], Kamlesh [Nagarkoti], and [Nathan] Ellis. So, while having Pathirana is a bonus, we are well-covered in case he’s unavailable.”

With a blend of experienced players and promising new talent, CSK continues to back its tried-and-tested strategies, ensuring they remain a formidable force in IPL 2025.
