Summer in Montreal officially commenced this afternoon as Tourisme Montréal launched the season amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the Grand Quai du Port de Montréal. Over 65 key players from the tourism industry convened to unveil an exciting lineup of attractions and events set to animate the city throughout the warmer months. Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal, utilized this annual occasion not only to showcase the industry’s business forecasts but also to introduce the must-see new offerings awaiting visitors this summer.
The Summer Season of 2024: By the Numbers
With the onset of summer confirmed by Mother Nature, tourism indicators point to a bustling season ahead. Against the backdrop of a strengthening American economy and a steady rise in flight numbers to and from Montréal, all signs signal positivity for the city’s tourism sector.
Projections for hotel forecasts from June to September anticipate a 2.2% rise in demand, complemented by a 2% increase in supply compared to the previous year. Hotel occupancy rates are forecasted to soar to 80%, with peak periods reaching 89% during the Grand Prix, 84% during the International Jazz Festival, and 88% during Osheaga.
In terms of air travel, arrivals by plane are set to surpass the figures of 2023 by significant margins: 17% for international arrivals, 13% for US flights, and 9% for Canadian arrivals. Montréal is expected to welcome 63,000 travelers weekly from the United States alone, while 35,000 air tourists will journey from France every week. The city’s allure continues to expand, prompting Montreal-Trudeau International Airport to introduce six new destinations this summer: Seoul, Marrakech, Stockholm, Austin, St. Louis, and Tulum.
The influx of ships docking at the Port of Montréal will further augment the flow of visitors this summer. With 20 vessels scheduled to visit, half of which are making their debut, a total of 32 embarkations/disembarkations and 9 stopovers are anticipated. These operations will bring an estimated 65,000 passengers and crew members to the city, predominantly consisting of luxury clientele. In 2023 alone, this surge in tourists from the St. Lawrence generated economic impacts totaling $17 million.
“Whether they come from the United States, Canada, Europe or Africa, visitors will be here in large numbers this summer,” predicts Yves Lalumière, president and CEO of Tourisme Montréal. “This liveliness will be felt by hoteliers and merchants as well as attractions and events, so we are very excited about the summer season ahead of us.”
Exciting Additions for Summer 2024
With each passing year, summer breathes fresh life into the cityscape with an array of new attractions. Alongside the perennial highlights of the season, a lineup of large-scale events is set to grace this year’s calendar. Among them is L’Appel Montréal, a burgeoning festival of independent music slated for May 30th at the Olympic Park. From August 22nd to 25th, the Grand Quai du Port de Montréal will play host to the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, featuring the world’s boldest divers and drawing an estimated crowd of over 50,000 spectators. Then, from September 5th to 7th, the Palomosa Festival will electrify Parc Jean-Drapeau with a mix of pop, rock, Latin, and electronic music. Rounding off the season, golf enthusiasts will converge at the Royal Montréal Golf Club from September 24th to 29th for the 15th edition of the Presidents Cup of the PGA Tour, anticipated to draw a crowd of 35,000 to Montréal.
