To bust this myth, Nutritionist Amita Gadre (@amitagadre) shared a video on her Instagram handle and explained how ghee can actually make you gain weight instead of burning fat.

Is Ghee Really a Fat Burner? Nutritionist Amita Gadre Explains
While addressing a viral video of Longevity Sherpa and educator Prashant Desai, nutritionist Amita Gadre explained if ghee really helps in burning fat. However, as opposed to the popular myth, it is a misunderstanding, as per Gadre. Ghee is actually calorie-dense – nine calories per gram – food and mostly saturated fat. Gadre explains that the recommended daily allowance of added fat is around 25 to 30 grams, so you should aim for one to one and a half teaspoons of ghee per day only.
Moreover, nutritionist Gadre said that ghee with warm water can help stabilize blood sugar but not aid in fat burning. Explaining how ghee of any kind does not help in fat burning, the nutritionist said:
- Ghee contains only a modest amount (0.5 to 1.5%) of Conjugated Linoleic Acid or CLA – known for weight management properties.
- Since it lacks CLA, excessive consumption of ghee can impact your lipid profile.
Gadre adds that ghee has benefits but doesn’t exceed one to two teaspoons daily to avoid health risks.

How To Make Ghee At Home
If you find yourself being skeptical of store-bought ghee, then you can easily whip some up from the comfort of your home. The best part is that it is easy to make and can help you easily satiate ghee cravings whenever you want. Follow these 5 easy steps to make ghee at home:
- Take full-fat milk and bring it to a boil. Let it cool for a few hours.
- Once the milk cools down and forms malai (cream), remove it and store it in a container. Repeat the same process for 5-6 days and keep the cream refrigerated.
- To extract ghee, take the collected cream and add a double quantity of water. Mix and whip till the cream’s froth starts floating on top.
- Separate the froth and heat it on low flame in the pan. This will separate the fat into clarified butter or ghee. Strain this liquid and store it for use.
