During the recent May Day holiday, Shanghai emerged as a top choice for inbound tourism, thanks to the successful launch of the “free half-day tour” initiative by Trip.com, a division of the Chinese online travel agency Ctrip Group. This initiative, introduced on April 15, garnered international praise and saw a remarkable 130 percent increase in inbound tourism bookings, aiming to elevate visitor experiences and showcase China positively.
Tongcheng Travel’s latest report on May Day holiday travel trends highlighted Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen in Guangdong province, and Chengdu in Sichuan province as popular destinations for inbound flights, underlining their global appeal.
The increase in inbound tourism to Shanghai was additionally propelled by the “Visit Shanghai” initiative spearheaded by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism. This campaign, promoted in 14 languages across five major international social media platforms, strategically showcased the city’s urban tourism allure.
Throughout the holiday period, Shanghai hosted prestigious events like the 2024 Shanghai Longines Global Champions Tour, Shanghai Auto Culture Festival, and Shanghai Coffee Week, attracting visitors from around the globe. Additionally, a plethora of art and cultural exhibitions, comprising over 200 offline displays, 1,000 educational activities, and 10,000 public events, enriched the city’s cultural landscape.
Shanghai’s tourism authority reported a 3.77 percent increase in visitors during the May Day holiday, reflecting the city’s growing popularity as a premier tourist destination.
