The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), in collaboration with IC Bellagio and members of the private Travel & Tourism sector, has unveiled a fresh initiative aimed at educating travelers on sustainable exploration.
Under the banner of ‘Community Conscious Travel,’ WTTC and IC Bellagio are teaming up to advocate for mindful travel practices that strike a balance between local residents’ well-being, the traveler experience, and the ecological integrity of popular destinations.
This campaign urges travelers to make conscientious choices, such as opting for off-peak travel times, promoting year-round tourism, and exploring lesser-known, emerging destinations. These decisions not only alleviate pressure on local infrastructure but also foster the long-term sustainability of communities, businesses, and ecosystems by ensuring a steady flow of visitors throughout the year.
Scheduled for full launch just before the 2024 Summer season, WTTC plans to leverage video-based storytelling across its social media platforms to spotlight the immense benefits that tourism brings to destinations and their inhabitants.
Italy serves as the inaugural focus of this initiative, aimed at generating awareness and dialogue around Community Conscious Travel and the positive social impact of responsible tourism. Italy’s example underscores the economic significance of the Travel & Tourism sector, which contributed nearly €215 billion to the country’s economy and sustains close to three million jobs. Notably, the sector provides employment opportunities for women and young people across various skill levels and industries.
By showcasing how both local communities and visitors can reap the rewards of socially responsible tourism, the campaign seeks to foster sustainable growth and prosperity. With the sector projected to support nearly 350 million jobs worldwide this year, it underscores the pivotal role of Travel & Tourism as an economic driver.
As the sector continues to expand, it is crucial to prioritize effective management strategies to ensure sustainable development and thriving communities.
Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Our Community Conscious Travel campaign shows how consumers can travel the world while making a positive impact and supporting local communities.
“There have always been very popular tourist sights and it is critical for destinations and local governments to work hand in glove with local communities to manage visitors in a way that benefits everyone. In Italy, and many other countries around the world, it is often visitors that help keep authentic arts, culture, and crafts alive.”
Andrea Grisdale, IC Bellagio CEO & Founder, said: “Across the spectrum of Travel & Tourism, the significance of people cannot be overstated. They are the lifeblood of this vibrant industry, intrinsic to the experience that travel provides and, ultimately, the economic growth it creates.
“At IC Bellagio we believe that Travel & Tourism is all about the people, not the traveller alone but the communities and the individuals that welcome them. We hope this campaign will draw an even bolder line between these parties and highlight the truly positive and mutually beneficial relationship that can exist when we choose to travel in a more responsible way.
“We are hopeful the local stories will encourage global dialogue, motivating others to share solutions that can be put into action as we pair resident quality of life with the opportunity’s tourism presents.”
The World Travel & Tourism Council dedicates itself to cultivating alliances between private and public entities, with the goal of promoting sustainable travel practices and spearheading inventive solutions for conscientious tourism.
This fresh initiative alongside IC Bellagio aligns with the broader mission of the global tourism authority to promote a well-rounded strategy for managing tourism. It builds upon earlier initiatives such as Destination Stewardship and managing the prosperity of destinations.
